Masaru Emoto thought that emotions can affect inanimate objects. If you are nice to water and then freeze it, it will make pretty happy crystals. If you are mean to water and then freeze it, it will make ugly unhappy crystals. He wrote: The result was that we always observed beautiful crystals after giving good words, playing good music, and showing, playing, or offering pure prayer to water.

Apparently, Emoto’s experimental protocols are so lacking as to be
unrepeatable, and even the most basic attempts at scientific controls are absent. Regular Skeptical Inquirer contributor Harriet Hall reviewed Emoto’s book
about his experiments herself, giving it the honor of “the worst book I have ever read.
Emoto’s work has largely been neglected by mainstream scientists, although a few have pointed out the obvious lack of controls and subjective nature of the photographing processes that completely negate his claims. He also refused James Randi‘s million-dollar prize to redo the experiment with proper double-blind conditions. Emoto did not particularly care about science though; he was primarily interested, of course, in selling his books, promoting his expensive “seminars” and “lectures”, and selling overpriced water.

Masaru Emoto™ (22 July 1943-17 October 2014) was a Japanese author and peddler of pseudoscience, most famously the idea that thoughts and words directed at water change the aesthetic appeal of the water crystals. He held a “Doctorate” in alternative medicine from a correspondence course from the Open International University of Alternative Medicine, and therefore called himself “Doctor.”
